Batalá Durham is in search of an enthusiastic and rhythm-focused musical director with knowledge of Brazilian Samba-Reggae style music or willing to learn about it. We are an established Batalá group and have been playing and performing for more than five years. This is a volunteer position and not paid, we have 501c(3) status.
Batalá was founded in 1997 by Giba Goncalves, a Brazilian living in Paris. He has written hundreds of songs that all 40+ Batalá groups worldwide learn and perform. Batalá Durham is one of eight groups in the United States. Visit our website at bataladurham.com where you can see videos of us performing.
We practice weekly outside, at Durham’s Central Park, and are cautious of conditions related to the pandemic. Masks and strict social-distancing guidelines are required when we are together.
We’re Looking for Someone Who Is:
Reliable. Practices are expected to begin again in April on Wednesday nights from 7 p.m. – 9 p.m. We’d like someone who is almost always available (within reason!) at that time to learn with and lead us. Most of all, we have fun. Batalá is entertaining to watch and enjoyable for us as drummers.
Open to Learning. We’d like the new director to learn the songs that we already know as well as help us to learn new ones.
Inclusive. Our organization welcomes people of all backgrounds and experiences and we expect our new musical director to support this.
What We Offer You:
Camaraderie, admiration, patience, fun and laughter, positive energy, and a mission to bring people together throughout the Triangle to enjoy Samba-Reggae percussion.
Resources from Batalá Mundo and Batala North America to help you learn what you need to know about our songs and directing us.
